South Tyrol tips: Why South Tyrol is always worth a visit
South Tyrol is a place that we visit regularly - usually every two years. We spent some time there again this winter. The region inspires us anew every time. As photographers and drone pilots, South Tyrol offers endless motifs, but even away from the camera, there is no other place for us that offers such a great opportunity to let body and soul come to rest.
In this article, I share my personal South Tyrol tips and talk about some of the most beautiful locations that you shouldn't miss.
1st Alpe di Siusi: Europe's largest high alpine pasture
The Alpe di Siusi is always a highlight for us in South Tyrol. It offers a unique backdrop that looks different in every season: rolling hills surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Dolomites and scattered alpine huts in between.
Our experiences on the Seiser Alm:
- In autumn: The golden light and autumnal colours are perfect for atmospheric pictures. The drone produces impressive shots of the vast meadows and surrounding mountains.
- In winter: The Seiser Alm is transformed into a winter wonderland with snow-covered hills and fantastic cross-country ski trails. Skiing is also a pleasure here, especially for families and beginners.
Between activities, it's worth visiting one of the many mountain huts where you can enjoy regional specialities such as dumplings or Kaiserschmarrn.
2. the Three Peaks: The landmark of the Dolomites
The Three Peaks are one of the most famous photo motifs in South Tyrol. For us, they are an integral part of every trip to the region.
The Three Peaks hike:
- The hike around the Three Peaks is an experience that is always worthwhile. The temperatures are particularly pleasant in autumn and the paths are less frequented.
- The drone allows you to capture the iconic peaks from completely new perspectives - a real highlight for photographers.
The Three Peaks also have their own special charm in winter. The snow-covered peaks and clear air make for atmospheric pictures that you won't forget in a hurry.
3rd Pragser Wildsee: A lake like a painting
The Braies Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in South Tyrol and a favourite destination for photographers. Nestled between steep mountain slopes, the lake looks like a painting.
You should know that:
- In autumn: The colourful forests around the lake are reflected in the turquoise water - a perfect moment for photos.
- In winter: The frozen lake and the snow-covered mountains create a very special atmosphere.
Especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon, you can enjoy the peace and quiet and photograph Lake Braies in its best light.
4th Lake Carezza: The rainbow lake
The Lake Carezza is another highlight that should not be missing from your South Tyrol list. It is often referred to as the "rainbow lake" because the colours of the water change from blue to green when the sun shines.
Our Lake Carezza tips:
- The best time to visit the lake is in autumn or springwhen the surrounding forests glow in warm colours.
- With the drone you can optimally capture the special shape of the lake and the surrounding landscape.
Lake Carezza is easily accessible and ideal for a short stop before travelling on to other destinations in the region.
5. culinary experiences: Alpine huts and South Tyrolean specialities
In addition to the beautiful landscapes, the food in South Tyrol plays a major role for us. Whether after a hike, a day of skiing or a relaxing walk - a stop at one of the mountain huts is always a pleasure.
Our favourites:
- Kaiserschmarrn: Freshly prepared and served with cranberry jam - a classic you have to try.
- Dumpling variations: Whether with bacon, cheese or spinach - they always taste great in South Tyrol.
- Wines from South Tyrol: Vernatsch and Lagrein in particular go perfectly with regional dishes.
6. winter sports: skiing and more
In winter, South Tyrol offers numerous opportunities for sporting activities. Skiing is of course the classic, but cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and tobogganing are also very popular.
Our South Tyrol tips for skiing:
- Alpe di Siusi: Perfect for families or leisurely skiing.
- Kronplatz: Varied pistes and modern facilities.
- Sellaronda: This ski tour takes you through four Dolomite passes and is a very special experience.
If you don't like winter sports, you can simply enjoy the snow-covered landscape and look forward to a relaxing day.
7 Bolzano and Merano: variety in the city
In addition to nature, South Tyrol also has a lot to offer culturally. The cities Bolzano and Merano are ideal for a day trip.
What we recommend:
- In Bolzano: The Laubengasse with its small shops is perfect for a relaxed day of shopping. The fruit market offers fresh produce from the region and the archaeological museum with "Ötzi" is also worth a visit.
- In Merano: The historic old town invites you to stroll around and the Merano thermal baths offer a great opportunity to relax in the centre of the city.
