Tips for preparing for a sedcard shoot

The sedcard is the most important tool models have at their disposal when applying for a new job. We explain in this blog post what you have to pay attention to when creating it.

The sedcard is a model's business card. Unlike a letter of application in other industries, a model sends the sedcard to a potential client with a selection of recent pictures that are as versatile as possible. The sedcard also contains information on body measurements, age and weight. The sedcard should always be up to date so that the client can get a clear picture of the outer appearance and thus avoid misunderstandings when booking. This is especially true if the hair colour or cut is changed. Especially in commercial advertising, it is important to present oneself as naturally and authentically as possible.

Through my work for agencies, I know what is important in order to present oneself as convincingly as possible with the sedcard. With these tips on how to prepare for a sedcard photo shoot, every model can prepare optimally.

Working with Polas

Besides professional pictures, Polas are also important. Polas is short for Polaroid and refers to an instant picture that can be used directly. Of course, these no longer have to be Polaroid pictures as they used to be, but the name has remained. It is best if the model wears little or no make-up and wears body-hugging but neutral clothing. The background, usually white, is as unobtrusive as possible so that the complete focus is on the model. The pose should also be natural rather than extravagant. The purpose of a pola is to depict the model realistically and without post-processing, so that interested parties can see exactly what the face and body actually look like.

Use different formats

Models should also make sure to present themselves as diversely as possible in their sedcard. This includes not only outfit, make-up and co, but also a diverse mix of close-up shots such as portrait shots and half-body shots that show both face and upper body. Full-body shots should also be included. These can be so-called action shots that show the model in motion during sports, on the catwalk or during other activities. In addition, there are also commercial shots that present the model together with a product. However, care should be taken to ensure that the brand remains anonymous.

Learning to communicate different moods

A sedcard is about presenting yourself with as many expressions as possible so that possible clients can get an idea of what the model is capable of. This way, the model can be booked specifically for a certain role. So my advice is to try out facial expressions and poses that communicate different moods at home in front of the mirror. This can also work well with a tripod and the self-timer. The motto here is: practice makes perfect.

Illustrate everyday situations

Not only diversity of expression, but also adaptability is required of models. This can also be elegantly expressed in the sedcard by depicting different situations. This can be a professional environment like an office, but also show the model interacting with other people. A model can also present herself while travelling, doing sports or cooking. Unusual environments such as construction sites or gardening show how changeable the model is. Here, the model can become incredibly creative together with the photographer.

Choosing the right location

If polas are to be shot, the location can be indoors to provide a neutral background. Otherwise, different locations offer great opportunities to present yourself in a particularly changeable way. If the model specialises in a particular industry, then the choice of location can also reflect this. Above all, the location should be suitable for advertising.

Book make-up

Of course, the make-up has to match the surroundings and the theme of the shoot. That's why it's often a good idea to have it done by a professional make-up artist. You can book a professional make-up artist for the shoot, simply turn up without make-up and have your make-up done directly before the shoot. This saves a lot of time that would otherwise have to be spent preparing at home.

Create mood board

In order to get on the right track with the sedcard, it is worthwhile to create a so-called mood board in advance. We have such mood boards ready to offer our clients as much inspiration as possible. Models can incorporate the personal traits of their own brand here to create a consistent look.

Shootings also viewed internationally

Models who work full-time in the industry often travel a lot. With a sedcard that contains internationally photographed images, a model shows from the start that she is also willing to take larger trips. This can create great enthusiasm, especially with international clients. For this purpose, we have the great opportunity to shoot with our clients several times a year, on fixed dates, on Mallorca or in Italy. The weather here offers fantastic opportunities for outdoor shoots, even in winter.
