Behind the scenes: A day in the life of a business photographer
What does the everyday life of a business photographer actually look like? Many people think of it as just a photo shoot with a camera and equipment. But there is so much more behind professional business photos: planning, strategy, intuition and real passion. In this article, I take you behind the scenes of my everyday life as a business photographer - with honest insights, real experiences and the little challenges that make this profession so special.
Early start - planning is half the shoot
My day usually starts with a good coffee and a look at my daily schedule. There is a lot of organisational work before every business photo shoot: checking emails, preparing equipment, reviewing briefings, going through mood boards. Because nothing just happens for me - I work according to a concept.
Especially for a business photo shoot, it is important that the visual language, colours and style match the brand and personality. That's why I coordinate everything with my clients in advance: Objectives, image utilisation, outfit ideas, locations and schedule.
Arrival & set-up
Whether I'm in Frankfurt, Mallorca or somewhere in Europe - I travel a lot. My equipment is always with me: camera, various lenses, reflectors, batteries, memory cards, cleaning cloths - I'm prepared for anything.
When I arrive at the shoot location, I start with a short chat to ease the tension. Then the technical set-up begins: checking the light, checking the location, first test shots. I prefer to use existing light, but I also work with flash or continuous light - depending on what the situation requires.
The shoot - the moment counts
Now comes the best part: the actual photo shoot. As a business photographer, my job is to make personality visible. I give clear but relaxed instructions and pay attention to posture, facial expressions and charisma. It's not about posed poses, but about naturalness with impact.
A good business shoot is like a conversation at eye level - genuine, lively, empathetic. I observe, empathise, capture. I love it when my clients feel comfortable, laugh and let go after a short time - because that's when the best pictures are created.
Challenges include
Of course, not everything always goes according to plan: sometimes the weather doesn't play ball, an outfit doesn't fit perfectly or the nervousness is greater than expected. This is exactly where the experience of a professional photographer comes in. I remain calm, flexible and solution-orientated. I've shot in cramped offices, on windy beaches, in the rain or at 35 degrees - and still always delivered pictures that my clients loved.
Because that is precisely my aim as a business photographer: to always make the best of the situation - with sensitivity and expertise.
Follow-up - the invisible part of the work
What many people don't realise: After the shoot, the real work begins. I save the data several times, view hundreds of shots, select the best ones and edit each image in my style: clear, modern, natural - but with professional retouching. No filters, no exaggeration - just honest optimisation.
My clients receive their final images via a password-protected online gallery - in full resolution and social media-friendly versions. Everything is designed for quality, longevity and reusability.
Being a business photographer means understanding brands
What characterises my work: I think not only as a photographer, but also strategically. I ask: Who are you? What do you want to achieve with the pictures? Who should see them? What do you want to radiate?
As a business photographer, I don't just work with models - I work a lot with managers, self-employed people and entrepreneurs. In other words, with people who want to use images to build trust, win customers or strengthen a team. I am part of the brand development, part of the success - and that is a great sign of trust, which I greatly appreciate.
